Daffys Elixir is a Quack Medicine and was sold as a universal cure, even if it started its life a a cure for toothache and for teething babies.  A chemical analysis carried out in the 1940s of the contents of an unopened bottle that had been excavated, found it consisted of Alcohol, with Senna as a chief ingredient.  It was a laxative rather than anything else.  The so called “Original Daffys Elixir” was widely faked, if you can actually fake a fake medicine.
It looks as if the list is a cook's guide for people who are not familiar with weights and measures.   Educated people would have learned all this at school and be familiar with them.  Charlotte's receipt book was intended to be an assemblage of items which are stating- "I am the owner of the household and this is how it is all to be done".
