"Ectoplasm" is unrelated to cell biology.
As early as the mid-eighteenth century, Swedish visionary Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) claimed to have seen a vapor steaming from his body. Passing references to similar phenomena are found even earlier. However, it was not until the early twentieth century that any systematic attempt to study ectoplasm occurred.
The use may be related to the 4 humours but at present no derivation of it has been found.
