<text>This collection contains more medicines than food recipes. It was stitched together with cotton to form a binding of some sort.

The two other folios are somewhat separate but form a whole with being kept together. It is difficult to tell which is the front cover or the rear one.

The owner has decided to call "Gravy Soup" as the front page because it is cleaner and "Rheumatism", the rear one, because it has a stain that suggests it was laid down on something wet.

The page edges are cleaner where they may have been exposed. That seems a good reason enough.

With the 28 leaves in the folio, half way through it was turned upside down and started to be written from the other end.

We have taken a great delight in dealing with this folio and addressing contemporary medical thinking. In many ways, with knowledge behind it, quite alarming.

We will begin with gravy and end up with rheumatism, so enjoy the journey.</text>

In the meantime Thomas Starkie, Rector of Blackburn, was watching the expansion of the textile industry, the developing Industrial Revolution, and his parish church was falling to pieces. From 1780 his parishioners were involved in ongoing industrial disputes with the cotton mill owners that would last a century.

The old church was pulled down in 1820.The tower remained until about 1870.

Elsewhere on this site the narrative of Thomas Thursby in the mid 18th Century shows how slowly their mindset altered.

Wealth and status offered little protection from disease and death. Their medicines offered little more than another way of dying.

The snapshot taken by these papers is of a bare 26 years.
</text>

It is also emetic and has a purgative action.
The writer may be describing the same plant or substance.

Asarum commonly known as wild ginger. The plant is called wild ginger because the rhizome tastes and smells similar to ginger root, but the two are not particularly related. The FDA warns against consuming Asarum, as it is nephrotoxic and contains the potent carcinogen aristolochic acid. The birthwort family also contains the genus Aristolochia, known for carcinogens. Asarum sensu stricto Is the type usually found naturally in Europe.
Assarabacca is the same plant.

White Hellibore is usually known as Christmas Rose. All helleborus plants are toxic, and all parts of the helleborus plant are toxic. Hellebore poisoning is rare, but it does occur. Hellebore plants are usually left alone by animals such as deer and rabbits due to the fact that the leaves of the plant produce poisonous alkaloids, making them distasteful to animals. The poisonous alkaloids have been known to sometimes bother gardeners with sensitive skin. Poisonings will occur through ingestion or handling. Hellebore plants should not be ingested as poisoning cases are most severe when the plants are eaten. This is especially true when hellebores are eaten in large quantities. Symptoms of ingestion will include: burning of the mouth and throat, salivation, vomiting, abdominal cramping, diarrhoea, nervous systems and possibly depression. Consuming large quantities of hellebore plants can be fatal.</text>

Zodiac charts determined the best times of year for letting blood from different parts of the body.
Medical tomes distinguished between diverting blood flow (bleeding the right arm to staunch a bloody left nostril, for example) and encouraging it (bleeding the foot to draw menstrual blood down). The barbers used lancets and fleams -- small double-edged blades that came with pocket-sized, often tortoiseshell carrying cases.
When George Washington died after falling ill with laryngitis his physicians bled him heavily, one after the other. The president gave up more than two litres of blood during the procedures and died a day later. Historians dispute whether it was the loss of blood or other complications that actually killed him.

A Burgundy Pitch Plaister is made from a yellowish brown or reddish brown hard viscous resin obtained as an exudation from the Norway spruce and used formerly in medicinal plasters .

This mercurial medicine is quite frightening, even if the metal mercury is less toxic. It is made to disperse the stuff as finely as possible for best absorption.
Mercury chloride, also known as calomel or mercurous chloride, has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic, topical disinfectant, and laxative.
It has other names as mercuric chloride or corrosive sublimate and was also used to treat syphilis (along with other mercury compounds), although it is so toxic that sometimes the symptoms of its toxicity were confused with those of the syphilis it was believed to treat. It is also used as a disinfectant.
Blue mass, a pill or syrup in which mercury is the main ingredient, was prescribed throughout the 19th century for numerous conditions including constipation, depression, child-bearing and toothaches.
In the early 20th century, mercury was administered to children yearly as a laxative and de wormer, and it was used in teething powders for infants.
The poisoning is unpleasant. The psychological symptoms associated with mercury poisoning inspired the phrase "mad as a hatter". Toxic effects include damage to the brain, kidneys and lungs. Symptoms typically include sensory impairment (vision, hearing, speech), disturbed sensation and a lack of coordination.</text>

It is potentially lethal. The 'Leeds Intelligencer' on Tuesday 12 July 1791 (p3), reporting the death of a baby from a misjudged dose of the medicine, said that; "...opium, laudanum, nay even Godfrey's cordial, syrup of poppies, and poppy tea, are deleterious poisons, and there is reason to fear that the lives of some, and the constitutions of many children, fall a sacrifice to such medicines, when imprudently administered."

Pellitory of Spain is a small Mediterranean edible and aromatic plant, Anacyclus pyrethrum, the root of which contains an oil formerly used to relieve toothache.

Calamus was largely grown from time immemorial for its rhizomes in the East and the Indian rhizomes were imported extensively long after it was common in Europe.
If the Calamus of the Bible is this plant, Exodus xxx. 23, Canticles iv. 14, and Ezekiei xxvii. 19, are the earliest records of its use.
The Calamus aromaticus of the Ancients is thought by some to be a plant belonging to the Gentian family, though the description of the plant 'Acoron,' a native of Colchis, Galatia, Pontus and Crete, given by Dioscorides and Pliny, seems to refer to the Sweet Flag.
It is now found wild on the margins of ponds and rivers in most of the English counties, and is in some parts abundant.</text>
