<text>Diachylon was originally a kind of medicament made of the juices of several plants also named diachylum or diaculum, but now commonly the name for lead plaster, (emplastrum plumbi)—a plaster made of lead oxide boiled together with olive oil and water. It is applied to sheets of linen, and works as an adhesive plaster when heated. In the 18th Century working class people used pills of it to procure abortion, in effect caused by lead poisoning. Another example of how the more affluent can slowly kill themselves.

Consumption is the old name for the disease tuberculosis. There is nothing quite like Spirit of Vitriol which is concentrated Sulphuric Acid when used as a medicine. Spirit of Sulphur is also Sulphuric Acid. The editor loves these views of the gentry trying to kill themselves once again even if the stuff may have been neutralised by apples. The idea of concentrated Sulphuric Acid floating around a kitchen is a bit scary. It would disolve the marble motar quite effectively however.

Hart's horn refers to the horns of the male red deer. Shavings from the horns and hooves of the deer were processed into "spirits,"
As above and associated with Sal volatile or smelling salts a solution of ammonia used as a detergent or in medicine. The usual active compound is ammonium carbonate</text>

For example, litharge of gold is litharge mixed with red lead, giving it a red colour;it is another cumulative poison.
Litharge of bismuth is a similar result of the oxidation of bismuth; litharge of silver is litharge that comes as a by-product of separating silver from lead, in fact litharge originally meant the mineral residue from silver refining. The term has also been used as a synonym for white lead or red lead.

A pipkin is a cooking pot with a flat base or three legs and bulbous walls with a spout in the rim.

Msr. Thomas Goulard had quite powerful incentives in his promotion of lead salts as a medicine. He was charging customers what, in today’s prices, would be about £80, for a gallipot of this poisonous muck. The medical profession such as it stood at the time, were able to ask leading questions about this form of treatment and some were noticing that there were poisoning effects behind the use of lead ointments. One can assume the gullible public were unaware of such bickering behind the scenes and continued to kill themselves with it.</text>
